It was late in the year, but the weather in the Caribbean was still warm, sunny, and just plain gorgeous and Declan Rosseau had decided he shouldn’t waste the afternoon he had off. A full week on the job in nine, sometimes more, hour surgeries had really taken a toll on his body and mind. Declan tried to recall what various problems the children he had operated on had. Most of them were heart, liver, or kidney transplants although there was the occasional emergency surgery. Declan sighed and allowed his brown eyes to scan the crowded scene.
Everyone else on the whole island must have had the same thought as him and as a result the most popular beach was swarming with people, especially tourists. His eyes caught hold of a brunette female lounging in the sand. She had medium length hair and a belly that was just starting to show signs of a pregnancy. A smile showed itself on his face and he made his way towards the woman. When he was within three feet of her, Declan squatted down and ran his fingers through the moist sand. ”Long time no see, huh?” He grinned and gazed to the femme. It had indeed been a while since either of them had spoken and Declan wanted to see how his child was developing and how his one-night-stand-turned-horrible was. ”How’s the….baby?” He gulped and looked out to the ocean. The waves lollopped back and forth mesmerizing Declan.

HOW COULD A NIGHT SO FROZEN BE SO SCALDING HOT? how could a morning this mild be so raw ?
» In a way, the recent separation between her and Declan was unintentional. For her, she was trying to stack up on hours now, so she could lay off and relax more when she really needed to, in a couple months. On his end, well, surgery was a busy specialty- she was sure if he had a choice he'd be around more. Or maybe he wouldn't. But, in a way, it was also intentional, at least for Jaeda. See, last time they really spent time together was about a month ago, and while it wasn't like before when they were constantly fighting, it hadn't exactly gone well. They ate, or started to, something that Declan made, and it was good, but when it got too personal, when they actually started talking, Jaeda balked. She didn't want to tell him about why she was home-schooled and her siblings weren't. She didn't want to explain her scars. She was having his kid after a lapse of judgment in an elevator, not marrying him after years of dating. There was no reason he had to know more about her.
» Today was one of those rare days off, and Jaeda wasn't particularly happy about it. She wanted to be at the hospital. She wanted to be doing something useful, not trolling her own apartment and accomplishing nothing but maybe setting a new high score in Guitar Hero. After hours of sitting around her living room and trying- and failing- to beat the Dragonforce song on Expert mode, Jaeda gave up and decided to go out. The beach seemed like a decent enough idea. She kind of wanted to surf, but it was too risky now, and she didn't want to explain to Declan that she'd lost his kid because she just had to win a wipe-out contest. She didn't particularly like tanning, but figured that she might as well go out anyway, if only to get the illusion of a social life, and get a little bit of color. What was the worst that could happen?
» After gathering up her things, Jaeda got into her car and headed to the beach. God, it was crowded... She sighed a little and wandered onto the sand, setting her towel down in the first available spot she could find. At least with it crowded like this, she was less likely to be singled out and asked about the scars on her side/back and shoulder. She sat down on her towel and laid back on it, picking up a book and starting to read. As she often did when reading a book, she only read a little while before marking the page, putting the book down, and thinking about it. This helped her understand. Maybe others would think it was weird? She didn't really care. She repeated the process several times, uneventfully. But this time was different. Just as she was about to pick her book back up, she heard a voice- Declan's- and sighed. ”Long time no see, huh?” "Ehh," she mumbled, with a noncommittal shrug. SHe wasn't even going to bother with excuses. Part of her wanted to bitch at him, but she also knew it was her fault, and besides, she didn't want to be that girl. They weren't even together- what was to stop hik from simply walking away? ”How’s the….baby?” "Fine," she answered flatly, and sat up, looking over at him. "What do you want?" She was suspicious of him, and wasn't sure why. Maybe it was because he was just too eager to be involved.

The warm, wonderfully refreshing, and intoxicating aroma of the sea entered Declan’s nose and began to bring up the memories of when he was a child and his mother would take him, his older brother, and younger sister to the gorgeous beach that was formed by the coast of Great Britain. It was great living just a few minutes drive from a place that promised an afternoon of fun, swimming, and his favorite-his mother’s picnic basket lunch. Declan remembered so vividly how every afternoon they spent at Dover Public Beach. First, his older brother Henry and him would run down the sloping hill of sand and dive into the water. “It’s to get used to the water,” Henry had explained so many times, although Declan did not question this. Anna, the drama queen of their family, preferred to build elaborate sand castles and other sculptures from the cool, moist sand. He and Henry would then proceed to stomple over her neatly planned out monuments. She would scream at the top of her lungs and draw attention to us. Mom, being the turtle that she is, would scold us harshly and then make us sit down in the sand next to her. It was something called a “time-out”, as Declan’s father had explained. Henry and Declan would squirm around until their mother would say, “Fine, go out and play, but behave yourselves!” They would run along the water and look for shells and what-not until Mother called them over for lunch. She would pack an array of wonderful goodies. Ham sandwiches, potato salad, watermelon, double-chunk chocolate chip cookies, and the list went on.
”What do you want?” A sharp, almost annoyed voice of a female snapped him out of his reminiscent daydream. How could she be so curt with him when all he did was merely come over and ask how his child was developing. Perhaps she had a terrible backache or something, though he dare not ask. Running his fingers through the warm, grainy sand, he thought of something to say. He didn’t want to be too obvious of his intentions. ”I wanted to know how you’ve been keeping up with….everything,” he worded his sentence as careful as possible so he wouldn’t get a kick in his sausage. ”How’s work?” He added and he was sincere about it. Declan really did want to know how Jaeda’s career was going, but most of all he wanted to know about his child. He wanted everything not to be so complicated and for them to be a couple; and not just because of the bun baking in Jaeda’s oven. He wanted them to be together because they could, and because when he was with her everything felt….right. Now he was starting to sound like some of those women off Oprah Winfrey’s show or something out of a Nicholas Sparks’ novel.

HOW COULD A NIGHT SO FROZEN BE SO SCALDING HOT? how could a morning this mild be so raw ?
» Jaeda never spent much time on the beach. As a child, she only went once, and that one time, she didn't even remember because she was so young. All she knew was that shortly thereafter, she was diagnosed for the first time. Afterward, her mother would never take her. There were too many germs at the beach. There were all kinds of bacteria in the sand and ocean water, and what if she touched a fish, or got stung by a jellyfish? She went again some time during college- she didn't remember exactly when- and decided she wasn't missing anything vital to her existence. Sure, it was pretty here, and that was great, but she wasn't exactly a huge fan of having sand all up in her butt crack, or tripping and feeling like she was landing on concrete, due to the sand's rough texture. That, and she didn't exactly take to tanning. The last thing she needed was skin cancer, on top of everything else.
» ”I wanted to know how you’ve been keeping up with….everything.” She shrugged a little and looked away again. "Perfectly fine," she answered, and wanted to add "without you", but didn't. That would seem just a bit too rude for her tastes, and besides, it wasn't entirely true. It was weird- she didn't even know what she wanted Declan to be doing all the time. Sometimes, she wanted him there, and sometimes she wished he would just be a typical guy and find a way to make himself scarce. No matter what he did, though, she would probably be mad at him for it. If he was constantly watching out for her, she'd be pissed and claim he was suffocating her. If he stayed away most of the time, she would be pissed because that's the kind of thing a deadbeat did.
» ”How’s work?” "Cut the crap," she countered. She was convinced he didn't care about her, but rather just his kid. Maybe he was one of those strange guys that had a strong desire to have kids, and they were part of his grand life plan. Maybe not this specific situation- what kind of sick fuck would plan this?- but kids in general. And what if Jaeda just so happened to accidentally fall into that plan, just as the incubator until the kid decided to make its appearance, and then when the kid's health was no longer linked to her own, she would no longer matter to him? "It's going fine," she answered with a sigh, just in case she was wrong, though she didn't think she was. "Stacking up hours now so I can kind of slack later." It was still going to suck. Jaeda hated laying around doing nothing- she'd done enough of that for one lifetime. But she didn't want to be responsible for the kid being early or sick, so she was going to suck it up and relax when it was time to; but not now. "I haven't been sick," she offered, not because she particularly liked conversing with him, but because she wanted to feel like less of a bitch. She'd been lucky, and not really gotten sick yet. Dizziness occasionally, sure, but so far she had been able to keep down everything she ate.
