SAMPLE --[/size]
From the moment Landon had opened his eyes that morning he had known it was going to be one of his bad days. Every muscle in his body ached as he rolled around, trying to untangle himself from the worn out hotel blankets that he had slept in. He had fought with Madison late last night, the argument culminating in him leaving her house – where he had been staying – and checking into a hotel for the night. He was going to go and apologize to her today, honestly, buy her flowers and chocolates and everything. But feeling as he did, Landon found himself unsure if he wanted to anymore. Maddie always knew when there was something wrong with him and she would certainly be able to tell he wasn’t well, which would make saying sorry all the more difficult.
After managing to free himself from the pale blue comforter, Landon took a long shower in the hottest possible water, hoping it would take away the pain and exhaustion he was feeling. No such luck, of course. As he climbed out of the shower, his lower half wrapped in the hotel’s fluffy white towel, Landon caught a glimpse of himself in the mirror and a deep frown etched itself onto his face. He looked like hell; paler than usual, his chest slightly sunken and his ribs a little too visible beneath his stretched skin. He really should go see a doctor, but he already knew what the results would say. He didn’t need to hear the confirmation. Gritting his teeth, Landon stared at his reflection, running his hand over his chin and the slight scruff that had grown there since his last shave two evenings ago. What was he going to do with himself?
Landon quickly decided he needed air that had not been recycled by the hotel ventilation units and hurriedly changed into the same clothes he had worn last night – dark wash denims and a dark purple t-shirt. He placed a black hat over his wet hair, knowing it would dry on its own and turn into the disastrous mess it usually was. Heading out of his fifth floor suite, Landon took the elevator to the main lobby, wishing the concierge a good afternoon as he stepped out into the bright sunlight of a Sutherland afternoon.
Maybe he’d start with breakfast – a bagel or something – just to get him motivated, not that he wanted to be motivated at all. What he wanted was to sit in bed and drink until he forgot everything. But that wouldn’t help anything at all, so the best thing to do was ignore the impending doom he felt in the pit of his stomach and continue to press on through life. As Landon rounded a corner, passing a Starbucks, a flash of bright red met his eyes. There was only one person he knew around here with hair that bright. Putting on his best fake smile, Landon stopped in front of the window, knocking on it gently, waving when the girl inside looked up at him.
Rose Sirus – he hadn’t seen that girl since last summer. He wondered what she thought about his disappearing act and how she would react seeing his face again when he had been gone for an entire year.
