just talk yourself up A N D T E A R Y O U R S E L F D O W N - - - - - - - - - - - - Beep. Beep. Carmen was woken up abruptly by her alarm clock. Groaning in protest, she stretched her arm out and stopped the annoying beep of her alarm. Opening her eyes, she glanced at it. 8:44 “Shit!”. As usual she was late. Punctuality had always been something Carmen couldn’t quite handle, and tardiness was inevitable. Jumping out of bed, she rushed to the bathroom to get ready. She wouldn’t have time to have a shower, thankfully she could use the ones at work. After shoving on her ‘uniform’ for work, she grabbed her bag, and ran out the door.
Working at the Windsor hadn’t been Carmen’s original plan. She had dreamed of going to college, getting away from this so called ‘paradise’. Things got in the way, and she ended up working for the hotel. It wasn’t as bad as it had originally thought, but at least it meant she could save up to pay for her tuition. The staff was friendly enough, but she really only got on with Harley. Partly because they worked with each other, but she liked to think it’s because he was a lot like her. He didn’t expect anything from her, and she could be herself around him, no masks needed.
Carmen’s car skidded to a halt in her designated parking space, and removing the key from the ignition, she got out of the driver’s seat, and head for her post at the front desk. The lobby was rather full, and customers were waiting to be served. She was relieved to see her boss was no where to be seen, and she ran to her post. The first customers, a snobby looking couple, walked up to her, and Carmen started her day, with the same old bright and a little fake smile, and the customary “Welcome to Lord Windsor Hotel. How may I help you today?”

& I WAKE UP EVERY EVENING WITH A BIG SMILE ON MY FACE ( and it never seems out of place ) The boy grinned as he said goodbye to two very good looking girls who just happened to have a question about more towels for their room right after getting out of the pool. He answered their question too fast, and before he knew it they were on their way, probably to go sip one of those fancy drinks and lounge around, showing off their gorgeous bodies and making the weaker men fall into the pool by accident. Ah, sometimes this place was actually paradise. Girls in bikini's, good food, and tons of fun while not at work.
Too bad Harley was at work. Sure, the girls in bikini's still dropped by, but for some reason it was less exciting seeing as he was not in his swim wear, but instead he wore a white shirt, black tie, and black pants. The suit jacket was hanging on his chair, and his shirt's sleeves were rolled up. Not quite as professional looking as his boss would have wanted. But of course, what the boss didn't know doesn't hurt him. Harley would rather be comfortable while on the job. After all, he was welcoming the hotels guests into what should be a very relaxing vacation.
Just as the two wonderful ladies walked away, Carmen showed up. He smiled at her but she was already talking to some people. Harley looked toward the hoard of people and sighed. Work was work. He copied what Carmen said, only directed at a happy looking couple. Must be here on honey moon or something. Sure enough, they were booking into their suite on the top floor.
Harley was nothing but proficient at his job. Soon enough, all the people were cleared out, thanks to help from the beautiful Carmen, whom he turned to. "Good morning Carmen." He said with a smile on his face. "How are you today?"

just talk yourself up A N D T E A R Y O U R S E L F D O W N - - - - - - - - - - - - “Sir, Madame, I’m really sorry, but I can’t find your reservation anywhere.” It was times like these that she hated her job. The looks on people faces when told something was wrong with their reservations could make Carmen cower in fear. Either because said guest looked utterly heartbroken or ready to kill. Either way, she didn’t like having to deal with them. “Look here missy, if you don’t find our booking right this minute-” This is when things got messy, and Carmen had never really known how to deal with threats. “Mrs. Copper, I do not think the current situation calls for such threats, and if you bear with me, I promise to sort this out.”
Typing frantically on the keyboard in front of her, she continued with to find a resolution for her current predicament. “I’m sorry, but there is nothing I can do for you, it’s just not here. The only solution I see is paying for another room-” Carmen couldn’t even finish her sentence before the Cooper’s started cursing and shouting avidly. There was nothing she could do but endure it, and she barely heard Harley greet her over the seemingly incessant insults and threats. “I’m doing fine, Harley. Just peachy.” She shot him a distressed and pleading look and out of the corner of her eye, she saw her co-worker speed through his awaiting customers. Why was she always stuck with the difficult ones? Just this week she had had to deal with two angry couples, a man who was old enough to be her father who had pushed his limits by trying to get her on a date. All in all it hadn’t been the most pleasant of weeks.
“Please…Mr. and Mrs. Cooper, please…If you just let me talk-”. In her two years of working at the hotel, Carmen had yet to learn how to deal with angry customers. Most of the time, she tried to tone out whatever it was the unsatisfied guests were coming up with in the hopes of sorting out their problems. Usually her boss was around to help in situations like these, but the head desk clerk was nowhere to be found. She cursed under her breath, hoping the Coopers would stop with the unnecessary shouting and let her work in peace.

& I WAKE UP EVERY EVENING WITH A BIG SMILE ON MY FACE ( and it never seems out of place ) Perhaps it was just just the fact that Harley was always smiling and always seemed to be in a good mood that had his customers smiling back at him, thanking him, and moving on to bring their belongings into their new home. Whatever the reason, the people lined up in front of Harley soon disappeared and the only couple left at the front desk were the Mr and Mrs Cooper that Carmen was trying to talk to.
“I’m doing fine, Harley. Just peachy.” Harley laughed out loud at that one. The tone in her voice and the huge "help me!" look she gave him was enough to make Harley roll on the floor laughing. Some times some of their visitors were nothing but trouble, and this couple seemed to be the worst Harley had seen in a while. He watched her for a bit, letting the couple bicker and banter. He knew all their arguing would come out to nothing in the end. Perhaps a free room, just to get them to shut the hell up.
Carmen wasn't getting anywhere. They wouldn't even let her try to talk. So, once again, Harley stepped in to help solve the problem, and maybe keep Carmen from having a mental breakdown. "Excuse me, Mr and Mrs Cooper, I couldn't help but overhear that you had a reservation problem. If you would let us explain, perhaps we can sort something out." He used his authoritative voice, the one where it demanded attention yet was still polite. The couple was swearing, and it was disturbing the other visitors that were mulling around in the lobby, so they had to go as soon as possible.
Carmen, Harley noticed, was never all that good at sorting out the problems with the angry guests. Unlike Harley, she didn't have the natural knack for making people smile. "This doesn't happen often, let me assure you. But, when it does, we can always find a solution." He told the couple, mostly because he didn't want them going home and telling their friends that Lord Windor Hotel was the worst place ever. They would probably mention his name, which would somehow get back here and he would be fired, along with Carmen. And he just couldn't have that. Carmen was too... wonderful, I guess the word would be, in Harley's eyes.
