DISTRICT THIRTEEN HAS BEEN OBLITERATED. In light of the recent
rebellions made by Districts across Panem - with Thirteen leading the attacks
with unlawful Nuclear weaponry - our leaders at the Capitol had no choice but to
take severe action. In a recent statement from the Capitol, President Deaton
expresses 'sorrow' for those who were 'foolish enough to incite a rebellion', and
that the deathtoll is 'unfortunate, but necessary.' Our sources tell us that the
rebellions have ceased completely, but the Capitol is adding extra security by
sending in PeaceKeepers as a local form of law enforcement. They have also
announced that the first annual Hunger Games will take place in July of next
year. May the odds be ever in your favor!
In the year 2012, as so many believed would happen, America fell. From its
ashes rose a new country, of sorts. Panem. The states were replaced by
Districts, thirteen of them, each serving their own purpose in order to benefit
the country as a whole. The founders of Panem were insightful, brilliant, and had
a grand vision of a nation that would never fall like the United States had. And
for a while, the system worked quite well. The Districts all did their duty,
whether it was farming, mining, or manufacturing, and over time Panem grew to
be one of the wealthiest, most innovative countries in the world.
But...things change.
As always, the leaders of Panem eventually grew corrupted. The yearning for
money and power could never be sated, and...Well, you know how the saying
goes. 'Absolute power corrupts absolutely.' And that it did. Taxes were raised
to the extremes, hunting was banned in most districts, and slowly but surely
food in the lower Districts grew sparse. And when people start starving while
their leaders eat like kings, tensions are sure to grow high.
Eventually the people could take it no longer. They organized a rebellion. At
first it was a secret operation - a meeting here and there behind closed doors,
quietly gathering weapons - and soon enough, when everything was prepared,
the Districts launched their attack against the Capitol. For a few months it
looked like the battle would go in the Districts' favor, but they could never have
the technology that the Capitol boasted. And so, to 'set an example', as they
put it, they dropped bomb after bomb on District Thirteen - which,
coincedentally, focused on graphite mining and nuclear weaponry. Needless to
say it was destroyed, as well as all of the people in it. Or at least, that's what
the Capitol tells everyone.
As another way to remind the people of the fact that they can do pretty much
whatever they want, the Capitol also created the annual Hunger Games.
The 'games', as they're called, pit teenagers against each other in the ultimate
game of Survivor. Each District chooses one boy and one girl between the ages
of twelve and eighteen, and after a highly-publicized training period, in the ring
they go. Twenty-four teenagers - or children - go in, one comes out. In order to
stay alive, they must kill each other, even the other tribute from their own
district. The last contestant wins. Did I mention the event is televised, and
every resident in Panem MUST watch? Their prize? Fame, fortune, a huge
house, and most importantly...as much food as their District can eat for a year.
For many of the starving families in each District, that's worth risking death.
Now it is the year 3021, and the seventy-second Hunger Games have just
passed. The outcome of the most recent Hunger Games was a first, and a
surprise to everyone. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark,
both from District Twelve, both won the Hunger Games. The key to their
success? Winning over audiences by playing the roles of star-crossed lovers.
Obviously, the Capitol isn't too happy about two teenagers outsmarting their
precious Hunger Games, and with tensions already at a high once again, it
looks like things are only going downhill from here.
IT LOOKS LIKE EVERYTHING IS GOING
UP IN SMOKE.
